• Silk Ribbon Embroidery with Mary Ann Braithwaite

  During this workshop Member Mary Ann Braithwaite will teach us how to make a variety of superb 3D ribbon flowers that can be used to embellish your quilts, embroidery, clothing or decor. 

  Flowers you will learn to make include a Rose, made from two widths of ribbon stitched together, gathered and then couched in a spiral to fabric, a Daisy made using a loop stitch with silk ribbon and a French knot, and a Water Lily created from a variety of materials and techniques.

  

  Mary Ann will supply a kit containing some of the necessary materials. This will include a variety of silk and other ribbons, needles and a selection of beads and buttons, all of which is included in the cost of your registration.

  You will need to bring along the following supplies - 

  A small or medium sized Embroidery Hoop (If you have more than one, please bring them all along so others can borrow one if they don't have one at home). Craft and even thrift stores can be great places to find these if you don't have one and want to get your own.

  Sharp scissors to cut ribbon and embroidery thread

  A pencil

  Your chosen background fabric (A fat quarter will be more than adequate)

  If you have beads, buttons or other decorative elements that you would like to include within your work please do bring those along.  Also, if you have any ribbon you would especially like to work with bring that along as well.
  

  We will have use of the hall for the usual 5-hours so do bring along something to drink and for lunch - a refrigerator is available for our use.

  As usual, this will be a fun group get-together to do what we all love doing - learning new quilting and sewing skills.

  You are welcome to register and bring along a guest (same fee applies).

  We'll share the above video which does a great job sharing some of the best scrappy quilts at QuiltCon 2024, including the maker's comments.  Then, get inspired, be inspiring as you view or share your projects.  Hear guild updates and chat with other quilters at our monthly daytime meeting. Enjoy the fun of the "Back Table" where you can bring or pick up fabric/notions/patterns/quilt magazines.  Before you go home, you must take home anything you brought that still remains. This meeting is being offered in person at St. Giles Church located at 8271 52nd St. N, Pinellas Park, FL 33781 and over Zoom.

• Let's Talk About That - SHOW & TELL Special

  At this special 'Let's Talk About That" meeting, which Alberta will be hosting on Zoom, we will have a special guest, Sara Felice.  Sara  is the curator at the Leepa-Ratner Museum, where we hope to hold an exhibition of our quilts in about 3 years.

  Allowing an art space to show our quilts means showing our work in the community in a different way than when we have a show (and we all know that 3 years is not that far away.)

  Instead of the planned topic of discussion, we will be holding an extended Show & Tell with members sharing examples of their quilted work and talking a little bit about them – much as you would do at a regular meeting show & tell.

  This will give our guest a good overview of the varied work that members of the Guild do and also let her get to know a bit about the Guild and its members.

  Rather than having members try to show their quilts live using the cameras on their phones, tablets or lap-tops, we would like you to send Alberta a photograph or photographs of a quilt(s) that you are particularly proud of, or even something unique that you have made. It could be something that you have previously entered into a show or might have entered given the chance – perhaps it would have gone into the show cancelled due to Covid. 

  A short description sent with the photograph will enable Alberta to talk about it on your behalf IF you were not going to be able to sign in for the meeting.  

  We are hoping to be able to show examples of quilts made using different techniques (EPP, Foundation paper piecing, traditional machine piecing, turned hand applique, raw-edge applique, art, modern etc., etc.), examples of quilts  made for different community projects (like Linus quilts and Quilts of Valor) and examples of quilted apparel and goods.

  Please send your photos(s) with a short description to Alberta Dalke -  jdalke@yahoo.com – as soon as possible so she can put together a slide-show ready for the meeting.

  The deadline for the photos will be Friday May 3 so that they can be organized before the Monday meeting.

  And remember, this is for everyone in the guild, not just those that sign in to Zoom meetings.

  Rachel is an art quilter living in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her work has featured in invitational and juried gallery shows and fine art/craft shows throughout the country.

  Primarily using hand dyed or painted cottons, silks and nonwovens, but also having a love of Asian fabrics and kimono silks, Rachel incorporates these ancient traditional fabrics into her compositions. The use of sheers, couching and fabric paints gives her work a sense of depth and texture.  Slightly curving lines portray gracefulness and curves are often present representing wholeness and creativity.

  In this PowerPoint lecture Rachel will demonstrate the idea that quilts do not need to be complex to be compelling.  Rachel will share her thoughts on how to choose great fabrics and simple designs to create amazing quilts, She will show some work from artists who have inspired her and also speak about how her background has informed her work.

  We are delighted to welcome back David Owen Hastings, quilter, graphic designer, print and textile artist, and a former President of the Seattle Modern Quilt Guild. 

  For this event David will be joined by Teresa Duryea Wong.

  Teresa is the author of six books on quilts and textiles and a contributing writer for Quiltfolk, Curated Quits, Quilt Diary Japan and other magazines. She also makes and collects quilts.
