For 40 years, in her ancient Manor House in the UK, Lucy Boston (1892 - 1990) sewed patchworks, at the same time as writing her famous Green Knowe children's books.  The best known of  her patchworks is the Lucy Boston Patchwork of the Crosses, over 4,000 copies of which have been replicated by patchworkers and quilters in the USA, alone.  What interested Lucy most, was the use of pattern within the fabrics she used, working with these to create different patterns within her patchworks.  This technique is now called Fussy Cutting and has inspired many quilters: https://talesofcloth.squarespace.com/blog/2017/8/23/how-to-fussy-cut-lucy-boston-quilt-along

Lucy Boston's patchwork collection is on display at The Manor, Hemingford Grey, in the UK, and the house is open to the public by appointment.  Diana Boston (Lucy's daughter-in-law), owner of the The Manor and curator of the patchwork collection, shows the patchworks to visitors as part of a guided tour of the house.

In this, live from the UK, virtual illustrated talk, Diana speaks about Lucy's life and looks in detail at a number of Lucy's patchworks, 'deconstructing' them virtually to show and explain the techniques that Lucy Boston used. There will be a Q&A opportunity at the end of the talk.

More information on The Manor and Lucy Boston's patchworks, books and garden, can be found at www.greenknowe.co.uk

Our mission is to preserve and promote the art of quilt making, stimulate interest through educating members and the public, and engage in projects for the community where needed and appropriate.
