Block of the month Cottage Group

2023 BOM

Where:  In Person and Zoom

When:  First Wednesday of the month at 10:00 AM.  See events calendar for Sew Inspired Meeting.

What:  A block of the month club where you work independently on the block in advance of the meeting and then share your progress during the meeting--everyone is welcome to see the progress and offer advice and encouragement (you don't have to be working on a BOM)!

Group Contact Person: Alberta Dalke

SQC Members: To be added to the BOM group, email SuncoastQuiltingCircle@yahoo.com and put BOM in the subject line. To be added to Alberta's email list for updates and notices, email her directly.

For 2023, we're following along with "A Quilting Life" which releases the BOM pattern and supporting youtube video on the first Monday of the month.  Please note that they have asked that we refer to their website, rather than provide their information here.  We'll meet to cheer each other on, share successes and challenges, showing our blocks at the Show and Tell portion of the Sew Inspired Meeting on the first Wednesday of the month, and stay after to share successes and challenges among the others in the 2023 BOM group.  Remember to download all the patterns by 12/31/2023.  After that, they are available for purchase from A Quilting Life.

January: The BOM information and January pattern you need is here.

FebruaryThe February pattern is now available at A Quilting Life hereIn the video she does talk more about the fabric requirements that some people had questions about. There is also a demo on how to find the pattern from the youtube site and the blog.

March: The March pattern is now available at A Quilting Life here.  Remember that the link to the pdf and video is down on the page with a green large button. It looks like an interesting block where the use of color will show off the block. It does have 8 flying geese. 4 with one color choice and 4 with another. You can use your favorite way to make those flying geese including the one in the pattern itself.  The 4 at a time is a good method too. The block will be 4 by 2 inches finished (4.5 inches by 2.5 inches unfinished). I know that I will use the Accuquilt 8 inch Qube and that is the quarter square triangle number 4 and the half square triangle number 5.

2022 BOM (April 2022-March 2023)

Blocks will be done by rows, top to bottom, starting with the Union Star in the upper left corner for April 2022 as block 1.

Block 1 Notes: In testing and checking the Union Star, the author/quilter did not include in the white fabric cutting instructions….

WHITE FABRIC CUT:    8    2 1/2” squares

(they are the corners of the pink 2 1/2” x 4 1/2” that make the pink flying geese)  Mark them diagonally on the wrong side of white fabric, fold or press a diagonal line, or use a tool like "Diagonal Seam Tape" to let you sew without marking each piece of fabric.

Block 4 & 10 Notes: As an alternate to these blocks, you may choose use Moda Block Heads 3, block 2, by Sherri McConnell "Sunshine Star". Email one of the group leaders if you need the pattern. The pattern for Block 10 "Christmas Star" from Piece and Quilt is missing. The alternate block is substiuted below.
